What Is ACL Surgery?

ACL surgery is done to restore or reconstruct the torn anterior cruciate ligament, which is an important ligament that is crucial for maintaining stability in the knee during activities like running and making sudden movements. An untreated injury may result in further instability in the knee and damage to the knee due to re-injury in the future. ACL surgery will restore stability, thus enabling the individual to participate in their usual activities.

Overview

Understanding ACL Surgery

A knee injury can happen in a moment. You may be playing football and suddenly turn, land awkwardly after a jump, or stop quickly while your foot stays planted. Sometimes there is no contact with another player, and it can be a result of sudden movement causing too much strain on the knee joint and tearing the ACL.

The ACL, or Anterior Cruciate Ligament, is one of the important ligaments that helps keep the knee stable. The AC L is used for twisting-type movements, including pivoting, turning, jumping, landing, or changes of direction in activities. With an injured ACL, some people experience knee instability or weakness that prevents them from participating in the type of activity that caused their injury.

This is why ACL tear surgery may be considered. However, surgery isn’t always the solution, as some patients can be treated with nonsurgical treatments for their ACL injury. The appropriate treatment depends on the patient’s condition, knee movement, injury severity, and the type of activities they want to pursue.

ACL Injury Can Involve:
  • Incomplete or complete rupture of ACL: The ligament can either be torn, partially or fully.
  • ACL stretching: It occurs where, in rare instances, the ligament was stretched but not torn.
  • Knee instability: An ACL injury may entail weakness in the leg or the sense that the knee might buckle.
  • Tear of meniscus: An ACL injury could happen concurrently with a tear of the meniscus.
  • Damage to cartilage: Damage to cartilage may happen concurrently when there is an ACL injury.
  • Injury of other ligaments: ACL injuries may happen together with injuries of other knee ligaments.
  • Various types and levels of severity: Types and severity of ACL injury differ from patient to patient.

Diagnosis and Treatment

An Orthopedic Surgeon can look at the knee. Check if the ACL is damaged. A complete check helps find out how bad the injury is and if surgery or other treatments might be needed. The best treatment to use depends on things like the patient's symptoms, how steady the knee feels, how active the person is and the general state of the knee.

Types

What Are the Types of ACL Injuries?

ACL surgery is done to fix a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, which is essential to stabilising the knee during running, turning, and changing directions. If left alone, the injury can cause instability problems again and cause more damage. When done correctly, surgery can help restore the knee's stability and allow the person to be active again.

ACL Sprain or Stretch

In this type, the ligament is stretched, but it remains intact. This is generally considered a milder form of injury.

Partial ACL Tear

Some fibres of the ligament are torn, while part of the ligament remains intact.

Complete ACL Tear

The ligament is torn through completely and may no longer provide normal stability to the knee.

ACL Injury With Other Knee Damage

The ACL may be injured along with the meniscus, cartilage, or another ligament.

Before going for ACL surgery in India, the type of injury can make a difference in how the knee behaves and what care may be considered. This is why a proper assessment is important rather than assuming every ACL injury is the same.
